THE UNPARDONABLE SIN - NYOBS 09.12

THE UNPARDONABLE SIN
Is there a sin that is so grievous, that it cannot be forgiven?

Definition

  • God’s word is the Standard of Righteousness -Sin in Hebrew means “missing the mark”.
  • Morally Responsible: Animals are not morally responsible creatures; so therefore they cannot sin. - Angles and Man are morally responsible creations and can sin.
  • Sin is rebellion against God; – It’s the violation of the laws of God in thought, word or deed; to reject God’s love and His ways. – Sin is a contradiction to the Holiness of God – It is Moral corruption. - Breaking God’s law at any point involves transgressions at every point.
  • By definition, the Unpardonable Sin is that of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit - but what does that mean?
  • Webster:  Blasphemy - The strongest term used for the mocking of God.-Slander, defame, revile. -  Profane or contemptuous speech, writing, or action concerning God or anything held as divine – any remark or action held to be irreverent or disrespectful. – The utterance of profane oaths, cursing or swearing.
  • The Term “unpardonable sin” is NOT found in the Bible, but is deemed to be the final rejection of the Holy Spirit’s testimony concerning the work and person of Jesus Christ.
Ps 119:160 – God’s word is the standard
160 All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal. NIV
James 2:10 – Stumble at any point of the law – guilty of all
10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. NIV
Luke 12:10 – Blasphemes the Holy Spirit
10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. NIV
Matt 12:31-32 – Un-forgiven in this age and the next
31 And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. NIV
32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. NIV
Mark 3:28-29 – Eternally guilty
28 I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them.
29 But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin. NIV
Jude 6 – Angels are morally responsible creations
6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home-these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. NIV
Prayer
  • We are instructed NOT to pray for those who mock the work of the Holy Spirit.
1 John 5:16-17 – Don’t pray for those that blaspheme
16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.
17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
NIV
Old Testament Example
  • We often think of the unpardonable sin as something that might happen in the future and we still have time to get our act together, but the Old Testament shows instances when God’s people sinned and God condemned them forever right then and there.
  • The Priest Eli had two sons, Hophni and Phinehas who were also priest, were having sex with the women working in the temple. – Blasphemy in deed and action.
  • Men grumbled against God and spread a bad report – Blasphemy in word and deed.
  • King Belshazzar drank out of the Temple goblets and praised his gods of wood. - Blasphemy
1 Sam 2:12 – No regard for the Lord
12 Eli's sons were wicked men; they had no regard for the LORD.
NIV
1 Sam 2:22 – They slept with the workers.
22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. NIV
1 Sam 3:13-14 – The sons of the Priest Eli – Unpardonable Sin
13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons made themselves contemptible, and he failed to restrain them.
14 Therefore, I swore to the house of Eli, `The guilt of Eli's house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.'" NIV
Num 14:26-45 – Men grumbled against God
26 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron:
27 "How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.
28 So tell them, `As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you the very things I heard you say:
29 In this desert your bodies will fall--every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me.
30 Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.
32 But you--your bodies will fall in this desert.
35 I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will surely do these things to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this desert; here they will die."
36 So the men Moses had sent to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble against him by spreading a bad report about it
37 these men responsible for spreading the bad report about the land were struck down and died of a plague before the LORD.
38 Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.
42 Do not go up, because the LORD is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,
43 for the Amalekites and Canaanites will face you there. Because you have turned away from the LORD, he will not be with you and you will fall by the sword." NIV
Dan 5:23-30 – Drank out of the Temple goblets to his Gods.
23 You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand.
30 That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain,

New Testament Example
  • Jesus was healing the sick, yet He was accused of being possessed by Beelzebub, the prince of demons thereby attributing His powers of healing to the Devil and not to the Holy Spirit.
  • Ananias & Sapphira sold some property and gave it as an offering, but lied about how much they sold it for. – It was theirs to do as they wished and it was ok to keep some of the money, but they lied to the Holy Spirit and died on the spot.
Mark 3:22 – They said the spirit in Jesus was from Satan.
22 And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebub! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons." NIV
Acts 5:3-10 – Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit
3 Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?
4 Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God."
5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.
6 Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.
7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8 Peter asked her, "Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?"  "Yes," she said, "that is the price."
9 Peter said to her, "How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also."
10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. NIV

Today’s Example
  • Communion seems like a simple thing, but we are warned to examine ourselves before we partake at the table of the Lord – We are to confess our sins and ask forgiveness – failure to do this brings sickness and death to our body – If you have done this through ignorance, confess your sins now - before God “closes your door” for it will never be opened again.
  • Homosexuality is a sin against the Holy Spirit that is in the temple of your body – opening up possible “Physical death” through AIDS.  “Spiritually”, Once God gives you up – It’s all over.
  • The mark of the beast is an indication of servitude and worship of the beast; a blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.  This is a counterfeit mark, mocking the marking of the 144,000 witnesses of God. - Once you receive this mark, there is no changing your mind. – You are a dead man walking.
1 Cor 11:28-31 – Taking the Lord’s Supper unworthily
28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.
29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.
30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. (Died)
31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. NIV
Rom 1:24-27 – Homosexuality – God gave them up
24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another
26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones.
27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. NIV
Lev 20:13 Homosexuality is an abomination to God
13 If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination… put to death NKJV
Rev 14:9-11 – The mark of the beast
9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand,
10 he, too, will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.
11 And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name."
NIV

Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin
“We have been weighed in the balances and found wanting”. Daniel 5:25

God will shut the door
  • Noah took on the ark all that would come – When the time came, GOD shut the door and nothing else entered. – The time is coming when the “open door” will close and no man can open it again.- The day of salvation; the day of grace will be over.
Rev 3:8 – God places before us an open door
8 I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. NIV
Gen 7:16 – They went in and GOD shut the door.
16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in. KJV
Isa 22:22 – When God shuts the door, it cannot be opened
22 I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. NIV
Redemption
  • Adam and Eve died spiritually “that day” in the Garden of Eden, when they sinned.
  • God made a way to redeem mankind through the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit;
Gen 2:17 – That very day they died spiritually
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." NKJV
Gal 4:4-5 – God sent His son to redeem us.
4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law,
5 to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. NIV
Titus 2:13-14 – Christ is the blessed hope of our redemption.
13 While we wait for the blessed hope-the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,
14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own. NIV

Redemption Rabbit Trail
The first born belonged to the Lord, they were considered His possession – It was necessary to buy back or redeem the child for the price of 5 shekels of silver when the child was one month old.
The Priest would say “do you want to redeem the child or leave him with me” – The father would answer, “I will redeem the child” and then pay the price – The priests would declare
Your son is redeemed”.
Jesus paid the price for us at the cross and redeemed us back to Himself. SELAH
