GIANTS
A first word
We all bring baggage into
a discussion of a Bible topic; things we already believe, but
sometimes our mind is
changed; sometimes we are left confused.
To talk about Giants, we first
should explore where they came from.
According to scripture;
some Angels rebelled and left their habitations and came to earth. Whenever angels are seen on earth, they are
always seen in the form of a man.
Nephilim
- Nephilim; Wikipedia;
The majority of ancient biblical versions, including the Septuagint, Theodotion,
Latin Vulgate, Samaritan Targum, Targum Onkelos and Targum
Neofiti interpret the word to mean "GIANTS". - Symmachus translates it as "the
violent ones" and
- Scripture clearly
states that some angels left their own habitations.
- “When men began to
increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them”. This is a special passage when you
realize that daughters of men had always been born to them – It seems at
some point, a desire was awakened in the “sons of God” and they
took “whoever they chose” to marry with no emphasis on character, but only
on beauty, probably marring more than one.
- These “Fallen” Devine
beings are identified as “Sons
of God” or Nephilim which
took the women of earth in marriage and had sexual intercourse resulting
in a hybrid of giants.
- There is no
marriage in heaven, as Devine beings are immortal and therefore there
is no need to propagate; to replenish or repopulate as mortals do on earth.
Jude 6 – Some angels left
their own habitation.
6 And the angels which kept not their first
estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting
chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. KJV
Gen 6:1-2 – Nephilim known
as “The sons of God”
1 When men began to increase in number on the
earth and daughters were born to them,
2 the sons of God saw that the daughters
of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. NIV
Job 1:6 – Satan and the
sons of God present themselves
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God
came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. KJV
Gen 6:4 – The Nephilim had
sex with the women of the earth
4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those
days--and also afterward--when the sons of God went to the daughters of men
and had children by them. NIV
Mark 12:25 – No marriage
in Heaven
25 When the dead rise, they will neither marry
nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven NIV
Side Bar
- The sons of Adam, the
Sethites and the Cainites were going in two
opposite directions keeping diversely apart physically and also in moral
and character distinctions.
- Some students hold that the Godly
line of Seth were actually “the sons of God” and were said to have
disobeyed God, by “coming down” from the mountains and breeding
with the wicked Cainites thereby producing giants; they conclude
that they were not any fallen angels at all, only disobedient men.
- Some students of the
Bible think that the “bad report” that was brought back by the Israelite
spies was actually a “False Report” and that they had not actually seen
giants, but were just afraid.
Num 13: 31-33 – Spies - After the flood of Noah - Giants
31 "We can't attack those people; they
are stronger than we are."
32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad
report about the land they had explored. They said, "The land we explored
devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.
33 We saw the Nephilim there (the
descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers
in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them." NIV
Giants
- Nephilim were a people that existed
before the flood of Noah and according to what I read existed after
the flood also. – So the Nephilim came down at least twice.
- I know this is
reaching, but in the Apocrypha,
the Book of Jubilees
- Giants terrorized the
Israelites from the time they entered into
- King Og, the last of the
giant Rephaites, bed was eight feet wide and thirteen feet long
- There were more
giants than you think; scripture says a Philistine Giant named
Ishbi-Benob was hell bent on killing David with his new sword, but David
was saved by one of his men.
Isa 45:14 – Giants called
Sabeans
14 This is what the LORD says: "The products
of Egypt
2 Sam 21:16 -17 – A giant named Ishbi-Benob
16 And Ishbi-Benob, one of the descendants
of Rapha, whose bronze spearhead weighed three hundred shekels
and who was armed with a new [sword], said he would kill David.
17 But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David's
rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. NIV
Deut 9:2 – Giants called
Anakites
2 The people are strong and tall--Anakites! You know about them and have
heard it said: "Who can stand up against the Anakites?" NIV
Deut 2:10-11 – Giants
called Emims
10 The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a
people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;
11 Which also were accounted giants, as the
Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emims. KJV
Deut 2:20-21 – Giants
called Zamzummims
20 That also was accounted a land of giants:
giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;
21 A people great, and many, and tall, as the
Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them,
and dwelt in their stead: KJV
Deut 3:11 – Giants called Rephaites – Bed 13 feet long
11 (Only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant
of the Rephaites. His bed was made of iron and was more than thirteen
feet long and six feet wide. It is still in Rabbah of the
Ammonites.) NIV
Josh 18:16 – The Valley of the Giants; The Rephaims
16 The boundary went down to the foot of the hill
facing the Valley of Ben Hinnom Valley of Rephaim
Goliath
- Goliath is never
described as a “Giant”, but as a “Champion” that was nine feet tall. He is thought to have been a descendent
of the Rephaims, a race
of Giants which had been scattered by the Ammonites and then took refuge
among the Philistines.
- If you remember the
story of how David slew Goliath with his sling shot, you may very well
remember that he reached down into the brook and picked up five smooth
stones. One to kill Goliath and
four more for his brothers if they messed with him.
- Goliath was over nine
feet tall and had four brothers; Ish-benob, Saph, Lahmi,
and another un-named brother that had six fingers and six toes.
- At some point, David
and his boys “took them all out”. – No archaeological skeleton remains
have ever been found of these giants – They were “totally” decimated. (or never existed)
Deut 2:21 – The Rephaims are compared to the tall Anakites
21 They were a people strong and numerous, and as tall
as the Anakites. NIV
Deut 2:20-21 The Rephaims
were driven out of their land
20 That too was considered a land of the
Rephaites, who used to live there; but the Ammonites called them
Zamzummites.
21 They were a people strong and numerous, and
as tall as the Anakites. The LORD destroyed them from before the Ammonites,
who drove them out and settled in their place. NIV
1 Chron 20:6 – Six fingers
and six toes
6 In still another battle, which took place at Gath
1 Sam 17:4 – The Champion Goliath
was over nine feet tall
4 A champion named Goliath, who was
from Gath
2 Sam 21:16 – Goliath’s #1 brother Ishbi-benob
16 And Ishbi-benob, which was of the sons
of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of
brass in weight, KJV
2 Sam 21:18 – Goliath’s #2 brother Saph
18 And it came to pass after this, that there was
again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph,
which was of the sons of the giant. KJV
2 Sam 21:19 – Goliath’s #3 brother
19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the
Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the
brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a
weaver's beam. KJV
1 Chron 20:5 – Goliath’s
#3 brother name was Lahmi
5 In another battle with the Philistines, Elhanan
son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, who had a
spear with a shaft like a weaver's rod. NIV
2 Sam 21:20 – Goliath’s #4 brother with 6 fingers and toes
20 And there was yet a battle in Gath

22 These four were born to the giant in Gath
WHAT IF
Sometimes I wonder about;
when God placed a mark on Cain that he made him thirteen feet tall,
a giant, so no one would
try to kill him. - Thirteen is the Biblical number for Sin, Rebellion and
Depravity – It was about this time that scripture starts talking about Giants.
- Just fun thoughts -
Gen 4:15 – Cain gets mark… Maybe he got stretched
15 But the LORD said to him, "Not so; if
anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the
LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. NIV
The Flood
- It was after the
actions of the Nephilim that the earth became corrupt. - The very next verse says that God was
grieved at man’s great wickedness and wanted to start over.
- The Nephilim were the
prelude to the “Flood of Noah”.
- It was at this time
God prepared to destroy the earth by flood of water and start over.
- Only nine LIVING
people were counted righteous as Methuselah had died just before
the flood and Enoch was translated and saved just before the flood, leaving
just eight living people; Noah, his wife, their three sons and their three
wives to be saved in the
- TRIVIA - A day is like a
thousand years to the Lord; so Methuselah lived 969 years, almost one
day of the Lord and Adam and Eve also died before one of God’s days ended, just like He said
they would. – “The day that you eat thereof you shall surely die”
– No man has ever lived over one “day of the Lord”. - SELAH
Gen 6:5-7 – God was
grieved
5 The LORD saw how great man's wickedness
on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his
heart was only evil all the time.
6 The LORD was grieved that he had made man
on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.
7 So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind,
whom I have created, from the face of the earth--men and animals, and creatures
that move along the ground, and birds of the air--for I am grieved that I
have made them." NIV
Gen 5:23-24 - Enoch
Translate – didn’t die
23 Altogether, Enoch lived 365 years.
24 Enoch walked with God; then he was no more,
because God took him away. NIV
Gen 5:27 – Methuselah lived 969 years.
27 Altogether, Methuselah lived 969 years,
and then he died. NIV
2 Peter 3:8 – A day is
like a thousand years to God.
8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends:
With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are
like a day. NIV
Gen 2:17 – The day you eat of the tree you will die
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat thereof you
shall surely die. KJV
Conclusion
- In my spirit I want
to embrace the scriptures at its face value; in the simplest of terms;
which is to say, what it says is what it is.
- Another part of me
fully understands the Greek mythology with Gods and Humans
cohabitating, which I strongly reject.
- I want to buy into the
concept of the Godly line of Seth inter-marring with the wicked line of
Cain, but this does not account for the GIANTS. – Therefore I must embrace
the scripture as it is written; fallen Angels cohabitated with the Women
of Earth.
- It is unclear if the
“Nephilim” were the “sons of God” that came down or the product of
their union with the women; their children, the Giants.
- Scripture supports
that Angels appear on earth and have direct contact with men and even eat
food with them. They are mentioned
in the OT 108 times and in the NT 165 times, that’s 273 times.
- This is a hard one,
with students on both sides of the argument. – Which side did you take?
In the multitude of counselors,
there is wisdom.
