 FORESHADOW

First Word

There are stories in the Old Testament that present a person, event, thing or type, that is
a Foreshadow of something that is to come in the New Testament.


Type of Antichrist

  • The Antichrist is presented in the New Testament, but there were many people that were a type of antichrist in the Old Testament. - There is only one Antichrist; spelled with a capital “A”; and he is Satan’s possession. Those that foreshadow him are spelled with a little “aand are a TYPE of antichrist.
  • Cain sacrificed to God in “deed”.  Abel sacrificed to God in “Spirit” and in deed.  God saw Cain’s spirit and rejected his offering. – Cain consequently killed Abel. A type of antichrist
  • Nimrod built Babylon and the tower of BabelBabylon throughout scripture would be anti-God and the mother of idolatry.  He “Hunted down” and killed men of God. Type antichrist
  • Pharaoh oppressed God’s chosen people the Israelites and made them slaves and worked them ruthlessly – His first born was killed by the plague - A type of antichrist
  • Korah a priest with 250 men rose up in opposition to Moses and Aaron’s leadership and sought to take their place. – The earth swallowed them up – A type of antichrist.
  • Balaam a “prophet” of God who was prevented from cursing the Israelites, but for a reward led them into idolatry and immorality – It cost him his life - A type of antichrist.
  • King Saul took it on himself to step into the office of the priesthood and make offerings to God; - God’s spirit left him and he lost his kingdom. – A type of antichrist.
  • Goliath, a proud and boastful giant who defied God’s chosen people, the nation of Israel.  God used a kid with a sling shot to take him down and embarrass the enemy – An antichrist.
  • Absalom sought to kill his father King David and take his throne. – His hair got caught in an oak tree and was killed with a javelin to the heart; His father wept - A type of antichrist
  • Jeroboam concerned about his own kingdom created a false religion to keep his people from worshiping at the temple in Jerusalem. – God struck him down – A type of antichrist
  • Sennacherib speaks against the Lord God and against his servant Hezekiah and tries to destroy Jerusalem. – God annihilated his army – A type of antichrist.
  • Nebuchadnezzar makes a golden stature and commands that when they hear the trumpet sound that everyone must fall down and worship it.  A type of antichrist
  • Haman tried to exterminate the Jews by tricking the king into signing a decree to kill those who’s customs were different from the Kings – Haman was hanged – A type of antichrist.
  • Daniel prophesied about the defiling of the temple of God by setting up an image to be worshipped; known as “the abomination that causes desolation” –Prophecy of the Antichrist.

Gen 4:4-8 – Unrighteous Cain killed his righteous brother Abel
4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. NIV
Gen 10:9-10 – Nimrod built Babylon
9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; that is why it is said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD."
10 The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, NIV
Ex 1:8-13 – Pharaoh worked the Israelites ruthlessly
8 Then a new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power in Egypt.
9 "Look," he said to his people, "the Israelites have become much too numerous for us.
10 Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country."
11 So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites
13 and worked them ruthlessly.  NIV
Num 16:1-32 – Korah the priest rose up against Moses
1 Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites--Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth--became insolent and rose up against Moses. NIV
31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart
32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households and all Korah's men and all their possessions. NIV
Num 25:1-3 – Balaam taught Balak how to trick the Israelites.
1 While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women,
2 who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate and bowed down before these gods.
3 So Israel joined in worshiping the Baal of Peor. And the LORD's anger burned against them. NIV
1 Sam 13:9-13 – Saul put himself in the place of the priesthood
9 So he said, "Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings." And Saul offered up the burnt offering.
10 Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to greet him.
13 "You acted foolishly," Samuel said. "You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. NIV
1 Sam 17:22-45 – Goliath mocked the God of Israel
22 David left his things with the keeper of supplies, ran to the battle lines and greeted his brothers.
23 As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard
45 David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

2 Sam 15:10 – Shout Absalom is King
10 Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel to say, "As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets, then say, `Absalom is king in Hebron.'"

2 Sam 18:14 – Joab killed Absalom with three javelins
14 Joab said, "I'm not going to wait like this for you." So he took three javelins in his hand and plunged them into Absalom's heart while Absalom was still alive in the oak tree. NIV
1 Kings 12:28 – Jeroboam created a false religion
28 After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt." NIV
2 Chron 13:20 – God struck Jeroboam down
20 Jeroboam did not regain power during the time of Abijah. And the LORD struck him down and he died.  NIV
2 Chron 32:10 – Sennacherib lays siege to Jerusalem
10 "This is what Sennacherib king of Assyria says: On what are you basing your confidence that you remain in Jerusalem under siege? NIV
2 Chron 32:21 – God annihilates Sennacherib’s army
21 And the LORD sent an angel, who annihilated all the fighting men and the leaders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. NIV
Dan 3:1-6 – Nebuchadnezzar makes an image of gold to worship
1 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, ninety feet high and nine feet wide, and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.
6 Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace." NIV
Est 3:9 – Haman seeks to destroy the Jews
9 If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them, and I will put ten thousand talents of silver into the royal treasury for the men who carry out this business." NIV
Est 9:25 – Haman and his sons were hanged
25 But when the plot came to the king's attention, he issued written orders that the evil scheme Haman had devised against the Jews should come back onto his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows. NIV
Dan 11:31 – Prophecy - Antichrist setting an image in the temple
31 "His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation. NIV

Type of Christ
  • Joseph the first son of Abraham and Sarah was the “favorite son” and was resented by his brothers and what happened to him has all the earmarks of that of Jesus Christ.
  • A) He was hated without a cause – B) Ridiculed by his brothers C) who plotted against him. - D) They stripped him of his robe and E) sold and betrayed him for silverF) Joseph was lied about by Potiphar’s wife and was G) placed in captivity with H) two guilty men and in the end I) He was not recognized by his own. – He was a type of Christ -  NYOBS 22.23 Potiphar’s wife
Gen 37:4 – Joseph was the first son of Abraham and Sarah
4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him. NIV
Luke 3:22 – God’s only Son
22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. KJV
Gen 37:8 – Joseph’s brothers hated him without cause
8 And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said. NIV
John 15:25 – Christ was hated without cause
25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: `They hated me without reason.'  NIV
Gen 37:19 – He was ridiculed and mocked by his brothers
19 "Here comes that dreamer!" they said to each other. NIV
Luke 22:63 – Christ was ridiculed and mocked
63 And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.
Gen 37:20 – He was plotted against
20 "Come now, let's kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams." NIV
John 11:53 – Christ was plotted against
53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. KJV
Gen 37:23 – The stripped him of his robe
23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe--the richly ornamented robe he was wearing- NIV
John 19:23 – Christ stripped of his robe
23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, NIV
Gen 37:28 – Betrayed him for silver coins
28 So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt. NIV
Matt 26:15 – Betrayed for silver coins
15 and asked, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" So they counted out for him thirty silver coins. NIV
Gen 39:14 – He was lied about by Potiphar’s wife
 14 she called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed. NIV
Matt 26:61 – Christ was lied about
 61 and declared, "This fellow said, `I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.'" NIV
Gen 40:1-3 – Joseph placed with two accused criminals
1 Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt.
2 Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,
3 and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined. NIV
Luke 23:32 – Christ placed with two criminals
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. NIV
Gen 42:8 – His own did not recognize him
8 Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him. NIV
John 1:10- Christ was not recognized.
10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. NIV

Types of the Rapture

  • The Rapture occurs just before the tribulation period and will lift up and save the saints. – The believers are not appointed to suffer the wrath of God, but will be rescued by Jesus Christ Himself. - Also God Himself promised to keep us from that hour of testing. - The following are examples of how God extracts his saints before destruction. NYOBS 01.23 The Rapture  – NYOBS 17.10 Noah’s Ark
  • Noah’s Ark lifted up and saved mankind and the animals from total destruction. – God left the door open for a week after Noah had entered. - This was a foreshadow of the Rapture.
  • The Red sea parted and let the Israelites pass through then destruction fell on the Egyptians who were perusing them, and they all died – A foreshadow of the Rapture
  • Lot and his family were taken up into the mountains by angels and saved before the destruction of the city of Sodom and Gomorrah. - This was a foreshadow of the Rapture.

1 Thess 5:9 – The saints are not appointed to suffer wrath
9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV
1 Thess 1:10 – Jesus will rescue us from the coming wrath
10 Wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead-Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath. NIV
1 Thess 4:16-17 – The Lord himself will come for us
16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. NIV
Rev 3:10 – God will keep us from that hour of trial
10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth.  NIV
Gen 7:13-14 – The Ark saved Noah, his family and the animals
13 On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark.
14 They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings. NIV
Ex 14:21-22 – The waters divided and Israel passed through
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided,
22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.  NIV
Ex 14:27 – The waters went back killing the Egyptians
27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward it, and the LORD swept them into the sea. NIV
Gen 19:15 – Angels took lot and his family up into the mountains
15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished."  NIV

Type Events of feasts
  • The feasts were a foreshadow of events that were to come at set appointed times.
  • Feast of Passover – Death passes over us because of Christ’s death on the cross – Calvary
  • Feast of the First Fruits – Christ’ Resurrection is the first of the first fruits of Saints.
  • Feast of Pentecost; NEW Grain - The coming of the Holy Spirit on the believers.
  • Feast of Trumpets – The trumpet call at the Rapture of the Saints; Christ’s second coming.
  • Feast of the Day of Atonement – The Tribulations; the beginning of atonement.
  • Feast of Tabernacles – Christ’s Millennium reign in His Tabernacle.
Lev 23:4 – There are appointed times for the feast
4 "These are the LORD's appointed feasts, the sacred assemblies you are to proclaim at their appointed times: NIV
Ex 12:7-8 – The blood of the Passover lamb saved them
7 Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. 8 That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. NIV
1 Cor 5:7 – Christ the Passover lamb - Calvary
7 Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast-as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. NIV
Lev 23:10 Bring the first fruits of the land to sacrifice
10 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: `When you enter the land I am going to give you and you reap its harvest, bring to the priest a sheaf of the first grain you harvest NIV
1 Cor 15:22-23 – Christ; first of the first fruits.
22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
23 But each in his own turn: Christ, the first fruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. NIV
Lev 23:16 – New grain offering - Feast of Pentecost
16 Count off fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to the LORD NIV
Acts 2:1-4 – Pentecost- coming of the Holy Spirit
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. .
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled.
Lev 23:24 – Feast of Trumpets
24 `On the first day of the seventh month you are to have a day of rest, a sacred assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts. NIV
1 Thess 4:16 – The trumpet call at the Rapture
16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. NIV
Lev 23:26-27 – Feast of the Day of Atonement
26 The LORD said to Moses,
27 The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, and present an offering made to the LORD by fire NIV
Rev 6:1 – Tribulations begin – Atonement begins
1 I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. NIV
Lev 23:34 – Feast of Tabernacles
34 "Say to the Israelites: `On the fifteenth day of the seventh month the LORD's Feast of Tabernacles begins, and it lasts for seven days. NIV
Rev 20:6– Christ reigns in-Tabernacle 1000 years

6 Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. They will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.
