Are there Good witches as well as Bad witches?

The supernatural has always been of interest especially communicating with the dead. 

The term for it is called “Necromancy”.

This “Secret Art” can be real and it can be faked. – What doors are you really opening?

• Necromancy is a form of magic involving communication with the deceased – either by summoning their spirit as an apparition or raising them bodily for the purpose of divination; imparting the means to foretell future events or to discover hidden knowledge. 
• Mediumship is the practice of certain people—known as mediums—to purportedly mediate communication between spirits of the dead and living human beings.
• There are several different variants of mediumship; the best known forms are where a spirit takes control of a medium's voice and uses it to relay a message, or where the medium simply 'hears' the message and passes it on.  - Other forms involve manifestations of the spirit, such as apparitions or the presence of a voice, and telekinetic activity.
• Familiar Spirits are supernatural entities believed to assist witches and cunning folk in their practice of magic. - By those alleging to have come into contact with them, they appear in numerous guises, often as an animal, but also at times as a human or humanoid figure, and are described as a "clearly defined, three-dimensional form, vivid with color and animated with movement and sound".

A Little Background

• Practice: Kings often used enchantments to get information to lead their nation.  They examined the entrails of sacrificial animals; they employed astrology, wizards, mediums and even consulted the dead - They did not seek God.
• Prohibited: The prophets of God had decreed that Israel should seek Jehovah God for information and direction, not mediums or spiritists; King Saul, in his obedience in his early days of seeking God, expelled all spiritists and mediums out of the country.
• Allowed: There were three recognized modes of Devine revelation allowed by God to receive information and direction.

1)   Consulting a Prophet of God; prophecy under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

2)   The interpretation of dreams.

3)   The use of the Urim and Thummim which was kept in the breastplate of the High Priest.  We do not know what they looked like, but supposedly they looked like dice that gave a “Yes” or “No” answer and possibly a “Refusal” to answer.

2 Kings 21:6 – Royalty sought out Mediums for information
⁶And he (King Manasseh) made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards: he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. (KJV)

Leviticus 19:31 – Do not defile yourself with Mediums.
³¹ ‘Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God. (NIV2011)

Leviticus 20:6 – Do not seek Familiar Spirits and Wizards
⁶ And the soul that turns after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

1 Samuel 28:3 - Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists

³ Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land. (NIV2011)

The Story

• King Saul had already barbarously massacred the High Priest and his family and could not seek their advice with the “Urim” and “Thummim”; nor did he have Devine dreams or visions.; and on top of that the prophet Samuel had died
• The “divinely appointed” Saul had disobeyed God.  Disobedience is the same as rebellion and is classified as “the sin” of WITCHCRAFT.  God had turned His face from Saul and would not hear his prayers, in fact God become his enemy. -To whom much is given; much is required - This is important… God had left Saul. – That means that Saul could NOT HEAR from God period. 
• NOTE:  There is no record of Saul ever seeking out the Prophet Samuel for advice.
• The Philistine’s army had gathered to war against Israel and Saul had tried all the ways “allowed” to seek God’s direction and heard nothing. -  Being desperate he sought out a medium.
• Oddly enough although Mediums had been banned; Saul’s servants knew where to find one.
• The famous Witch of Endor was not known as a witch who used magic, but only as a woman who had a familiar spirit; a medium who probably lived in one of the many caves which abounded around the neighborhood of the village of Endor.  Their houses were built at the entrance of a cave and their cattle were stalled in them along with the owners.
• The night time journey to see the Medium was about 7 or 8 miles in distance passing over the shoulder of a ridge that came very close to the Philistine encampment; a very perilous journey on foot and surely was taken in the agony of despair.
• King Saul has “fasted” for the upcoming séance. - He disguised himself and sought the medium out to bring up the prophet Samuel from the dead in order to find out what to do about the Philistines.  Saul swore a solemn oath in the name of God “who had already left him”, that the medium would not be punished for bringing up the dead.
• Getting right to the point – When the woman brought up the prophet Samuel, it scared the tater tots out of her.  Saul receives information that he already knew; that God had departed from him and confirmed that Israel would be captured and he and his sons would die and further confirmed he was going to HELL.
• NOTE:  This is important - Saul did not receive any new information that Samuel had not already told him.

Luke 12:48 – To whom much is given – much is expected

1 Samuel 15:22-23 - Samuel said God rejected Saul as King
²² Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

1 Samuel 28:7 – There is a medium at Endor
⁷ Then Saul said to his servants, "Find me a woman who is a medium that I may go to her and inquire of her." And his servants said to him, "In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at Endor" (NKJV)

1 Samuel 28:8-11 – Bring up Samuel from the grave - Hell

⁸ So Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes, and he went, and two men with him to the woman by night. And he said, "Please conduct a séance for me, and bring up the one I shall name to you."
⁹ Then the woman said to him, "Look, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the spiritists from the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?"
¹⁰ And Saul swore to her by the LORD, saying, "As the LORD lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing." Then the woman said,
¹¹ "Whom shall I bring up?" And he said, "Bring up Samuel for me."

1 Samuel 28:12-14 - Scared the Tater Tots out of her
¹² When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice and spoke to Saul, saying, "Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!"
¹³ The king said to her, "Do not be afraid. What did you see?" And the woman said to Saul, "I saw a spirit ascending out of the earth."
¹⁴ So he said to her, "What is his form?" And she said, "An old man is coming up, and he is covered with a mantle." And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and stooped with his face bowed down.to the ground.

1 Samuel 28:15-16 – Saul tells Samuel God departed from him.
¹⁵ Now Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" And Saul answered, "I am deeply distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me anymore, neither by prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may reveal what I should do."
¹⁶ Then Samuel said: "Why then do you ask me, seeing the LORD has departed from you and has become your enemy?

1 Samuel 28:17-18 – The reply – you did not obey.
¹⁷ And the LORD has done for Himself as He spoke by me. For the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David. Because you did not obey the voice of the LORD
¹⁸ nor execute His fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this thing to you this day.

1 Samuel 28:19 – More bad news – you are going to HELL
¹⁹ Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines. And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me.

Hell

• NOTE:  Hell contained a second compartment known as “Paradise” or “Abraham’s Bosom” which was separated by a large gulf that no man could pass.  Those who died seeking God went to “Paradise” and those that didn’t were on the other side of the gulf in HELL proper.
• When Jesus was resurrected, He went to hell; did a little preaching for three days then took the compartment of hell known as “paradise” to heaven where it is now and then hell became enlarged. NYOBS 15.36 – ABRAHAM’S BOSOM
• This brings us up to the Point that Samuel was in hell when he was called up, but was in the compartment called paradise, not HELL proper where Saul was eventually going to go. 

Sidebar

• Many Israelites believed that supernatural powers dictated their lives – Cleaver people capitalized on this pagan belief and became Mediums and Sorcerers for some easy money.

• The Medium’s practice was to mutter and make peeping noises supposedly communications from the dead.
• The use of Mediums and their “Secret Arts” opens a door in your life to demonic activity.

• Possessed - Once a demon enters into a person, he becomes the “doorkeeper” of his soul and can allow other demons to enter. – You can have many and become totally possessed.
• We are what we confess. Demons cannot read our mind - they only knows what we speak.
• The Believers Protection – There are seven (complete) things protecting us from the evil one; Submission to God - The Blood of Jesus Christ – The Holy Spirit within us - God’s Word from the Bible – Our Authority as believers – The Gifts of the Spirit – and Our Prayer life.
• A Christian cannot be possessed with an evil spirit – It cannot co-exist with the Holy Spirit.

Here’s where we are

• The question that begs to be answered is since God had condemned the practice of Necromancy, did Saul actually see Samuel brought back from the dead?  - Well, the spiritist certainly saw something that looked like Samuel; an old man covered with a mantle or robe and she was badly shaken.
• God had turned away from Saul, so Saul turned to SATAN. – Heaven would not answer so in desperation Saul turned to knock at the gates of Hell. - Now that’s really the bottom line. 
• You have to ask then, are there any other occurrences of people being raised from the dead to communicate with the living.  The answer is NO, this is the ONLY instance. – So what did Saul see, or did he actually see anything?
• Here is where you must accept that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, without error, and that all scripture being inspired of God carries the same weight regardless of how few times a subject is mentioned.
• Proving scripture with scripture we find God denying a request for Lazarus to return from the dead in Paradise to communicate with the living on earth. – Paul was caught up into Paradise, but was silenced and could not tell what he saw. - Christ ALONE communicates with the dead. - So what appeared to Saul was NOT from God, but was probably from Satan.
• Seducing Spirits – Doctrines of Devils - It is Satan that comes with strong delusions, signs and lying wonders. – Satan gave Saul a diabolical delusion of a counterfeit Samuel; had it been the True Samuel he would have told him to repent and turn back to God and bring David back from exile and beg for God’s mercy.
• NOTE:  It is well worth pointing out that the medium was the ONLY ONE that saw something; Saul didn’t see anything. She described what she saw to Saul and he fell down and bowed low.  Since she was so frightened, something “supernatural” must have happened.
• Pretended Ignorance - Saul stood over a foot taller than all other Israelites and the deference paid to him by his two attendants and his swearing an oath to God that she would not be harmed was that of only a king could do; this probably gave her a GIANT clue that this was King Saul. She wasn’t sure, but wasn’t taking any chances in her conversation with him. - Since it didn’t take but about 30 minutes to prepare him supper including slaying the fatted calf, I think she was already tipped off and had made “Kingly preparations”.
• We don’t know if what she saw was “flesh” or an “apparition” or an “internal vision”, but while in her trance she was able to see through his disguise and confirm her suspicions that this was none other than King Saul.
• NOTE 2 – Based on her serving Saul his “Last Supper”, many commentaries paint the “Medium” as a GOOD witch; a GOOD person who was sensitive, compassionate and caring,” but God will say to her; I NEVER KNEW YOU, depart from me you worker of iniquity. – I believe she feared that the King would become ill and die in her cave and she would be punished and lose her life; … what she should have feared was losing her soul.
• That’s where we are… It’s not our GOOD WORKS that saves us, it’s our faith, OUR OBEDIENCE and His Grace.

Deuteronomy 18:9-12 – Abomination; Sorcerer, Medium, Spiritist

• Demons work through warlocks, wizards, witches, mediums, psychics, divine healers, fortune-tellers, palm readers, crystal ball readers, and astrologers who have yielded their minds to the spirit realm. – These people are so blinded that they believe they are receiving information directly from the departed dead; the “good spirits” of God. 
• Demonic interest: The Order of the Golden Dawn - Yin/Yang – Astrology - Tara Cards – Hypnosis – Silva Mind Control - Symbol Therapy - Visualization & guided imagery – Yoga (Hindus) - Tai Chi – Reflexology - Magnetic Healing - Transcendental Meditation – Chanting - Spirit Channeling – Automatic Writings – Séances -  Ouija boards – LSD color experimentations – Cosmic consciousness – shaktipat, attunement or paradigm shift – necromancy (raising the dead for communication). - Speaking in Demonic languages – Acupuncture – Acupressure – Biofeedback, Guided Imagery and Horoscopes.

Familiar Spirits

• Scripture indicates God forbid consulting; magicians, sorcerers, wizards, and witches; they were known as “mediums” that could communicate with the dead.  This was a big business.
• A demon is called a familiar spirit because they possess supernatural information and knowledge that you seek. They whisper, mutter and peep.
• Ventriloquism; the speaking without moving your lips helped fool the people with whispers, muttering and peeps - “Magic potions” that bubbled with reflections in a cup gave predictions – “Casting of lots” was also done frequently. - People sought the dead, instead of God. – Even though God forbid it, people still believed in this supernatural power to direct their life and sought it out. – God plainly said, to kill the medium.
• If God says to NOT communicate with the dead, then it must be possible to do so. The dead person you think you are talking to is actually a dead demon - They are lying spirits.
• NOTE: Demons are neither male nor female; they manifest themselves as they wish.

Concept of Hierarchy – more than you want to know

• The principal of hierarchy of intermediary beings is; FIRST; the gods or divinity which hold the most power – NEXT those closest to the gods; - NEXT those closest to humans – Their belief was, without the hierarchy, communication between humans and the divine could not exist.
• These PAGAN concepts made their way into the lives of the Israelites and early Christians and the same vocabulary was used to describe Devine–Human contact.
• First was God, YHWH; a name so powerful it was never spoken – Next was Jesus closest to God who has a name only He knows. - Next were the prophets who were closest to man.
• You can get the picture when the early church baptized in the NAME closest to God, that of Jesus Christ His only Son.
• Physical contact with Holy men produced miracles – Elijah laid upon a dead child and he came back to life – Elisha did the same thing – Elisha’s bones brought a man back to life -Jesus touched the hand of Peter’s mother in law and she was healed – he touched the eyes of a blind man and he was healed – The Holy Spirit was given by the touching or laying on of hands and Simon the soccer wanted to buy some of that.
• Clothes worn by the Holy Men absorbed and transmitted a portion of divine power. - Elijah’s mantle parted the waters. - The garment of Jesus radiated healing – Handkerchiefs and aprons of Paul healed.
• So you can see why the woman with the issue of blood thought that if she could just touch the hem of the Garment of Jesus she would be healed and if Peter’s shadow just fell on the sick they would be healed. - WOW

The Secret Arts

·         The belief that there were a host of intermediary beings known as demons that existed between the gods and humans.

·         The belief that physical objects can hold demons that can influence the divine or divinity. The ART of combining these objects will result in a blessing or a curse.

·         All the Major Prophets condemned divination which includes:

a)    Passing a son or Daughter through the fire - sacrificing children to appease the gods.

b)    Amulets – Wearing headbands, pendants or charms on the person as well as on camels with snake images or symbols of the sun or moon to ward off trouble or receive favor.

c)    Consulting Mediums – to purportedly mediate communication between spirits of the dead and other human beings. - a spirit takes control of a medium's voice and uses it to relay a message, or where the medium simply 'hears' the message and passes it on.

d)    Necromancy, the calling up the dead. - summoning a spirit as an apparition or raising them bodily – for the purpose of divination, imparting the means to foretell future events or discover hidden knowledge.

e)    Soothsaying, guidance by clouds or stars, similar to tea leaf readings.

f)    Spiritism – the channeling of spirits – consulting someone living who is wise or clever or inventive to obtain information – a fortune teller.

g)    Witchcraft, extracting information or guidance from a pagan god by observing oil floating on water, or (Haruspicy) the condition of a liver or entrails of an animal. (Sortilege); observing the position of rods, sticks, arrows cast on the ground; drawing of straws.

h)    Sorcery – "wrongdoing" or "mischief" and is used to describe malevolent, dangerous, or harmful magic, "evildoing" or "malevolent sorcery" -   a magical act intended to cause harm or death to people or property, it can involve (Pharmakeia) the act of poisoning or drugging someone.

i)     Interpretation of dreams (Oneiromany) – believed to be the major vehicle by which the gods sent messages. – Some would sleep in the temple (incubation) hoping for a dream from a resident deity.

j)     Astrology – Zodiac - The assumption that the stars were in harmony with the earth, and the fate of all of mankind rest in their movement.

k)    Interpreting Omens, (Augury) observation of; heavenly phenomena – natural phenomena – flight of birds – eating habits of chickens – unusual births or deaths– involuntary human actions like a cough or a hiccup. – Hydromancy; observing water – Pyromancy; observing fire.

l)     Conjuring Spells - the act of calling or summoning, a spirit, demon, god or other supernatural agent – The use of wands, staves, incense and fire, daggers and complex diagrams drawn on parchment or upon the ground. – to spell bind - to bind up someone – to tie someone up in a magical knot.

m)   Magic – an attempt to “compel” a divinity to do what they wish. - The use of drugs to bring on trances to gain supernatural power - to influence conditions or actions by using rituals, symbols, actions, gestures and language - where some act can produce a result somewhere else; (producing plagues or sickness) - a collaboration with spirits who cause the effect - to appease and receive benefits from the pagan gods.

n)    Divination – an attempt to secure information from a Devine being about matters or events that are hidden or lie in the future. – NOTE: There is no attempt here to control matters, but only to learn about them; even this was forbidden. – The implications is; if you do this you do not TRUST God’s promises.

Ezekiel 13:9 – Ezekiel condemns diviners
⁹ My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations. They will not belong to the council of my people or be listed in the records of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign LORD. (NIV2011)

The soul cannot live apart from the spiritual realm; if it is separated from God

the empty space will be filled with demons.  It is an evil and bitter thing to forsake

the fountain of living water and seek out broken cisterns that can hold no water.

Jeremiah 2:13 - Apart from God; there is no living water
¹³ For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, to hew for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns That can hold no water. (NASB)

Conclusion

·         Saul lost everything including his life because of his disobedience and for seeking the counsel of a familiar spirit – NOTE: God did not bring up Samuel in the séance with Saul; and Saul did not receive any new information that he did not already know. -  NYOBS 11.20 – DEMONS

·         Jesus Christ, the Son of God is the only one that can communicate with the dead.

·         Any supernatural communication with the dead is coming straight from the pit of hell.

·         Scripture teaches that Christians have DIRECT ACCESS to God through the NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES, that of Jesus Christ His only son born of a woman.

·         Spiritual Hierarchy.

The closer you get to Jesus Christ, the closer you get to JEHOVAH God.
