WORSHIP - NYOBS 20.12

WORSHIP
Worship is mentioned in scripture 158 times – Praise 339 times – Sing 122 times – Pray 226 times
WHAT DOES WORSHIP LOOK LIKE?

A first Word

In this study I wanted to see what the Bible has to say about praise and worship
without seasoning it with the way I was brought up in Church.
My momma told me to be quiet; be still, be reverent and be solemn.
So that pretty much leaves out singing in tongues, raising your hands, clapping, shouting,
dancing, and waving banners; let alone beating a drum.

Images, Objects and Rules
  • Objects - My very first finding was that God did not want any object in the heavens above or in the earth below to be worshiped.
  • Images - God will not share His worship with any object or image. – This would include images of Mary the mother of Jesus, images of saints or images of Christ on the Cross. -  NO IMAGES.
  • Rules - Scripture goes on to say that we worship in vain when we worship through rules.
Acts 17:23 – Objects of worship
23 I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship,
Zeph 1:4-5 – Objects in the sky
4 I will cut off from this place every remnant of Baal, the names of the pagan and the idolatrous priests-
5 those who bow down on the roofs to worship the starry host, NIV

25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator- NIV

Ex 20:4 – The second commandment – Any likeness of Anything
4 You shall not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness (of any thing) that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth ASV
Mark 7:6-7 – Rules taught by men
6 These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain;
7 their teachings are but rules taught by men.'  NIV
