Order
of Melchizedek
Aaronic
Priesthood – Levitical Priesthood – The Torah – The Talmud – The Midrash
First Word
·
Melchizedek knew God either because of a supernatural revelation or
through a post-flood tradition. – He was without a father or mother, no
descendants, having neither beginning nor an end. (Some students of the Word
think there were just no records on the genealogy of Melchizedek.)
- Melchizedek
was made like the Son of God. Note: Melchizedek resembled God’s only
Son and not the other way around. - Since he was made like the Son of God,
then his characteristics are of the most High God. (Other
students believe that Melchizedek and Jesus Christ were the same person.) (Study on Christophany) NYOBS 01.21 - DID CHRIST APPEAR BEFORE
HE WAS BORN
·The reason that the study of “the Order of Melchizedek” is
important is because during the time of Abraham; the Torah, the Talmud and the Midrash
scriptures all maintained that the coming Messiah would be a High Priest. – HOLD THAT THOUGHT -
Psalm 76:2 – He dwelled
in Zion
2 His tent is in Salem , his dwelling
place in Zion. (Jerusalem)
NIV
Genesis 14:18 – He was the
High Priest of the most high God.
18 Then Melchizedek
king of Salem brought out bread
and wine. He was
priest of God Most High, NIV
Hebrews 7:3 – Without Father or Mother – No beginning or end
3 Without father or mother, without genealogy,
without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God
he remains a
priest forever. NIV
Hebrews 7:3 Melchizedek made like the Son of God
3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but MADE LIKE THE SON OF GOD, remains a priest continually. (NKJV)
3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but MADE LIKE THE SON OF GOD, remains a priest continually. (NKJV)
Priestly Writings
- The Dead Sea Scrolls refer to Melchizedek as a Devine Being, as Elohim
and indicates he will be at the “Day of Atonement” and will ATONE for the people predestined to him, He will
also judge the people. Another Qumran document identified Melchizedek
as an angelic being who administered judgement.
- Other obscure writings have been translated
to show that Melchizedek instructed Abraham in the Torah well
before it was brought forth on Mount Sinai and taught the concepts of a
universal Deity; the ONE God and Father of
all. He presented teachings about
the conduct and organization of the local universe and that another Son of God would come in the flesh, and that he would
be born of a woman. - He blessed
Abraham with prosperity.
·
Rabbi Moses ben
Maimon
(son of Maimon) was a medieval Sephardic Jewish
philosopher who became one of the most prolific and influential TORAH
scholars of the middle Ages. His writing were known as MAIMONIDES.
- In his Mishna
Torah Maimonides compilation, he
explains that Jacob
separated his son LEVI from his other sons and anointed him as PRIEST to instruct and teach his brothers the ways,
traditions and methods of “Service to God” as practiced by his forefather
Abraham.
He also instructed his sons to perpetuate this status of Levi for eternity. - (Maimonides, Avodah Zorah
1:15)
·
The Law of Moses stipulates that only
the male descendants of Aaron be commissioned to serve as Jewish
priests before the God of Israel and the Jewish nation. - This
commission is believed in Judaism to be "a covenant of everlasting
priesthood" and not eligible for replacement by
other tribes of Israel. – NOTE; in that
day, in order to be a Priest you MUST be from the order of the Tribe of Levi. – HOLD
THAT THOUGHT -
·
The Talmud is a set of books
consisting of the Mishnathe body of Jewish civil and ceremonial
law and legend comprising the Mishnah and the Gemara.
– It is a collection of commentaries on originally oral laws THAT SUPPLEMENTED SCRIPTURAL LAWS. (Wikipedia)
·
Midrash halakha is the name given to a
group of expositions on the first four books of the Hebrew Bible. These Midrashim, which are written in Mishnahic Hebrew set out a clear
distinction between the Biblical texts that they discuss, and the rabbinic INTERPRETATION of that text. (Wikipedia)
·
The purpose of the Midrash was to resolve problems
in the interpretation of difficult passages of the text of the Hebrew Bible,
using Rabbinic principals of hermeneutics and philology to align them with
the religious and ethical values of religious teachers. It is a verse by verse
explanation using a form of storytelling. (Wikipedia)
·
The Judaic MIDRASH identifies Melchizedek as a contemporary of Shem
the son of Noah.
The Book of Genesis affirms that Melchizedek was "PRIEST OF GOD MOST HIGH".
·
The
MIDRASH and the Babylonian
TALMUD maintain that the PRIESTHOOD held by Melchizedek, pre-dated the patriarch
LEVI by
five generations. The Priesthood was given
to his contemporary Abraham who in turn passed it to his descendants, Isaac then
to Jacob.
·
NOTE: Did you get it? - The “Priesthood of
Melchizedek” pre-dated the “Priesthood of Levi” by five generations. – HOLD THAT THOUGHT -
Genesis 14:18-20 – Abraham gave tithes to
Melchizedek
18 And Melchizedek, the KING of Salem and a PRIEST of God Most High, brought Abram some bread and wine.
19 Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth.
20 And blessed be God Most High, who has defeated your enemies for you.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a TENTH of all the goods he had recovered. (NLT)
(NLT)
The Priesthood
·
David composed a song prophesizing about HIS LORD MESSIAH saying; The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind; “You are a Priest forever in the order of
Melchizedek”. - David was
speaking prophetically about a Priesthood that was higher than that of Aaron
and the Priestly tribe of Levi.
- When we first meet Melchizedek, he is introduced to
us in Abraham’s time as the King of Righteousness (zedek) and the King of Salem (peace). - Scripture says he lived in “Zion”
which is an affectionate name given to Jerusalem which is located on one
of the hills known as Mount Zion.
This term Zion was also applied to the Temple and
the surrounding community.
- Abraham
had just defeated the King Kedorlaomer and his army and liberated his
nephew Lot, his family and possessions and on the way back home he
encountered Melchizedek.
- Abraham
gave tithes to him, indicating that the Priest Melchizedek was superior to
him. – DID YOU
GET IT; Melchizedek was greater
than Abraham.
–
HOLD THAT THOUGHT -
Psalm 110:4 – Priestly commission forever is irrevocable.
4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a PRIEST FOREVER, in the order of Melchizedek
NIV
Hebrews 7:1-2 – Salem
- King of peace
1 This Melchizedek was
king of Salem and priest of God Most
High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and
blessed him,
2 and Abraham gave him
a tenth of everything. First, his name means "king of righteousness"; then
also, "king
of Salem" means "king of peace." NIV
Hebrews 5:10 – He was designated by God to be the High Priest
10 and was designated by God to
be high
priest in the order of Melchizedek. NIV
Hebrews 5:6 – The Order confirmed again; Priest
forever
6 As he says also in another place, you are a priest
FOREVER after the order of Melchizedek
KJV
Hebrews 7:11 - Higher order than Aaron Levitical Priesthood
11 If perfection could have been attained through
the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the law was given to the
people), Why was
there still need for another priest to come - one
in
the order of
Melchizedek, not in the
order of Aaron?
NIV
Hebrews 7:15-16 - Priesthood of power of an indestructible life
15 And what we have said is even more clear if another priest
like Melchizedek appears,
16 one who has become a priest not on the basis of
a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life.
NIV
Hebrews 6:20 – God the Son is our High Priest
20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an HIGH
PRIEST forever after the order of Melchizedek. KJV
The
Messiah
- This
priesthood
served as a “Type of Christ” and foreshadowed the
coming Messiah.
·
The Old Covenant eligibility for “The Promise” was determined by your
birth; you had to be a descendent of Abraham whose seed gave us the “Levitical
Priesthood”.
- The Law of Moses required that they perpetuate this status of
Levi for eternity;
the priesthood could NOT be transferred to another tribe.
- Jesus
was not a Levite, nor a Levitical Priest, so how could He be the High
Priest Messiah. He was of a
“HIGHER ORDER” of Priesthood,
that of Melchizedek. – Jesus Christ is our HIGH PRIEST forever.
·
There was a change in the
Priesthood
when Jesus was made a Priest after the order of Melchizedek
which was an OLDER and HIGHER order than that of the Levitical
Priesthood. When there is a change in the Priesthood there MUST be a change in the Law; thus a New Covenant was born, THE
OLD COVENANT HAD BEEN FULFILLED. – HOLD THAT
THOUGHT
Hebrews 6:20 – Jesus; a
Priest after the order of Melchizedek
20 where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on
our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek. NIV
Hebrews 7:12 – Change in Priesthood – Change in Law
12 For when there is a change of the priesthood, there
must also be a CHANGE
OF THE LAW. NIV
Matthew 5:17 – Jesus came to fulfill the Law, not abolish
it.
17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I HAVE not COME TO abolish them, but to FULFILL THEM. (ESV)
17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I HAVE not COME TO abolish them, but to FULFILL THEM. (ESV)
New
Covenant
·
The New
Covenant begins
NOT at the birth of Jesus, but at His death – Jesus
was born “Under the Law” of the Old Covenant – He referred often to the Torah,
the writings of Moses and amplified those laws to show that they could
not possibly be obeyed. – His teachings were directed to those who were
still “under
the law”. - He taught that
they must be born again; “Out from under the Law” - That He would give
them a new heart and put His Spirit in them. – YOU MUST GET THIS; Jesus had fulfilled
the Old Covenant Law.
·
The New Covenant lifts the veil of the Law of Moses and with unveiled faces, we behold the glory of
the Lord, and are being transformed into the same image of His Son from one
degree of glory to another. - His death DEMOLISHED
THE WALL between the Jew and the Gentile drawing ALL men
into Him.
·
Jesus,
who was without sin, took our sin so we could become righteous – His being
lifted up on the cross was to draw ALL
humanity unto Him. - We now participate in His righteousness because we have
been “Made
Perfect” forever by His FINAL
SACRIFICE for our sins.
·
Side Note: There was a mystery
hidden since creation; Abraham’s Covenant would be extended to the Gentiles. - Everybody
that was not a Jew was referred to as a Gentile or a Greek; that would
be you and me.
– We CAN
now get in on Abraham’s Covenant if we CHOOSE.
·
New Commandments - We now serve God
without being subject to the 613 Old Laws. Jesus has fulfilled the Laws – Now there are
only two New
Covenant Commandments or Laws.
1. Love God with all your
heart, soul and mind.
2. Love your neighbor just as
you love yourself.
·
Side Note:
These two laws were actually from the Old
Covenant, but they were NEW to them because they were not observing them
anymore.
·
Jesus said that He was the ONLY WAY to the Father God; that there was NO OTHER WAY, YOU MUST GET THIS; God in His Grace and Mercy
has given humanity “A LIFETIME” to search for Him and choose. - NYOBS 82.02- GRACE AND
TRUTH -
NT - Matthew 22:37-40 – Two Commandments only – New but Old
37 Jesus replied: "`Love the
Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all
your mind.'
38 This is the first and
greatest commandment.
39 And the second is
like it: `Love
your neighbor as yourself.'
40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two
commandments."
OT – Deuteronomy 6:5 –Love
the Lord your God with your heart
5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. (NKJV)
5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. (NKJV)
OT - Leviticus 19:18 - Love your neighbor as yourself;
18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself;
18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself;
John 12:32 -33 – Lifted up on the Cross drew all men
unto Him
32 When I am lifted up from the earth, will
draw all men to myself."
33 He said this to show the kind of death he was
going to die. NIV
2 Corinthians 5:21 – Jesus without sin, took our
sin
21 God made him who had no sin to
be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of
God. NIV
2 Peter 1:4 – We can now
participate in His Devine Nature
4 these he has given us his very great and
precious promises, so that through them you MAY (choose to) participate in the divine nature.
Hebrews 10:14 – We have been made perfect forever
14 because by one sacrifice he has made perfect
forever those who are being made
holy.
John 3:3-7 – You must be
born again to see the Kingdom
of God
3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the
truth, no one can see the kingdom
of God unless he is BORN AGAIN."
4 "How can a man be born when he is
old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his
mother's womb to be born!"
5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no
one can enter the kingdom of God unless
he is born of water and the Spirit.
6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives
birth to spirit.
7 You should not be surprised at my saying,
`You must be BORN AGAIN.'NIV
Ezekiel 36:26-27 – I will
give you a new heart and spirit.
26 I will give you a new heart and
put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone
and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful
to keep my laws. NIV
Philippians 2:13 – God’s Spirit in us gives the
desire to do good.
13 for it is God who works in you to will
and to act according to his good purpose. NIV
Hebrews 8:10 – He put His laws in our hearts and mind.
10 This is the covenant I will make with Israel after
that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their
hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. NIV
2 Corinthians 3:13-18 The
Old Covenant veils the Messiah
13 Not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end.
14 But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the OLD COVENANT, that same VEIL REMAINS unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away.
15 Yes, to this day WHENEVER MOSES IS READ (The Old Covenant)
13 Not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end.
14 But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the OLD COVENANT, that same VEIL REMAINS unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away.
15 Yes, to this day WHENEVER MOSES IS READ (The Old Covenant)
A VEIL LIES OVER THEIR HEARTS.
16 But WHEN ONE TURNS TO THE LORD (The New Covenant),
16 But WHEN ONE TURNS TO THE LORD (The New Covenant),
THE VEIL IS REMOVED.
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (ESV)

John 14:6 – Jesus is the ONLY WAY to Jehovah God
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.
NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH ME.
The Take Away
·
The Torah required the Messiah, the
Savior of the world to be from the line of David and a Priest. – Jesus was from
the Line of David, but was not a Priest from the Levitical line; therefore He was rejected as the Messiah by the Jews.
·
Jesus was a Priest from the order of Melchizedek an order OLDER than Aaron’s Levitical
priesthood by five generations. - Melchizedek
the Priest of God, resembled the Son of God; he had no mother or father and had
no beginning nor end. - Melchizedek was a Christophany of Jesus Christ who
appeared throughout history.
·
The Jews today have remained
basically a nation of Humanism; a nation of Works as they have rejected the New Covenant and continue to embrace
the Old Covenant which God Himself rendered inoperative. – But the Book says one day ALL ISRAEL WILL BE SAVED. -
·
The Book
says that
the seed of Abraham is not just those who were born a Jew, but also those who
have been grafted into the Jewish vine. – ALL
ISRAEL will be those that have accepted Jesus the Christ as their Messiah;
their Savior and Redeemer.
·
God knew
that some of the people of Israel would have hard
hearts, therefore there was a MYSTERY that was unveiled in the Covenant of Promise
… that NOT all the children of
Abraham were descendants of Israel. –
Some who had unbelieving
hard hearts, would have their branches broken off from the vine and the Believing Gentiles from a wild olive branch would be grafted into the
vine in their place. - The Gentiles would
also have Jewish roots.
·
At the
death of Christ, the veil of the
temple that was separating
humanity from the Holy of Holies (God) was torn in half; it had required a Priest to be
their mediator, now Jesus, God the Son was
their mediator. The dividing wall that was between Man and God, the Jew and the Gentile has been torn down. Now, there is just ONE humanity with ONE Shepherd; that of the
Lord Jesus Christ. – It was His mercy and grace that extended THE PROMISE to the Gentiles who did not even pursue God, who were
in this
world without
hope and without God; that would be you and me.
·
Melchizedek is the missing link of the Messiah’s Priesthood. - The Point
is; the Priesthood of Jesus Christ is superior to Abraham, the
Priesthood of Aaron and the resultant Levitical Priesthood.
·
My desire is not so much for you to
know the BOOK of the Lord, but to know the LORD of the Book. - Having
a Spirit Filled life is not what you feel;
it’s what you do. - When someone talks to
you about God, it’s not “Bible Thumping”
judgement; this is someone who is grief stricken, knowing that you will be
separated from God forever. – SELAH
-
·
YOU MUST GET THIS; God in His Grace and Mercy
has given us “A LIFETIME” to search for Him and find Him. - The Free Will choices we make on this side of eternity have eternal
consequences. – Life is Choice Driven. –
- IT’S IN THE BOOK –
Matthew 27:51 – The separating Veil of the temple
was torn
51 And behold, THE VEIL OF THE TEMPLE WAS TORN IN TWO from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. (NASB)

2 Corinthians 3:15-16 The Old Covenant veils the
Messiah

16 But WHEN ONE TURNS TO THE LORD (The New Covenant),
16 But WHEN ONE TURNS TO THE LORD (The New Covenant),
THE VEIL IS
REMOVED.
Romans 11:25 – Mystery revealed- Gentiles included
25 I want you to understand THIS MYSTERY, dear brothers and sisters, so that you will not feel proud about yourselves. Some of the people of Israel have hard hearts, but this will last only until the full number of Gentiles comes to Christ. (NLT)

Romans 9:6-8 - Not all are
children of Abraham
6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel,
7 and NOT ALL ARE CHILDREN OF ABRAHAM because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.”
8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but THE CHILDREN OF THE PROMISE ARE COUNTED AS OFFSPRING. (ESV)

Romans 11:17 – Gentiles grafted into Abraham’s Jewish root.
17 But some of these branches
from Abraham’s tree—some of the people of Israel—have been broken off. And you GENTILES,
who were branches from a wild olive tree, HAVE BEEN GRAFTED IN. So now you also receive the
blessing God has promised Abraham and
his children, sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God’s special
olive tree. (NLT)
Ephesians 1:11-14 – TWO GROUPS; Jews & (Everybody else) Gentiles
11 In him WE (Jews)
were also chosen,
having been predestined
according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the
purpose of his will,
12 in order that we, who were the first to hope in
Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.
13 And YOU (Gentiles) also
were included in
Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having
believed,
YOU (Gentiles) were
marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance
until the redemption of those who are God's possession-to the praise of his
glory.
NIV
John 10:16 – I have sheep
that are not Jews, but are Gentiles
16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold:
them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be ONE fold, and ONE shepherd. KJV
Ephesians 2:11 -13 – Gentiles once separated
now brought near
11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are
Gentiles by birth and called
"uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the
circumcision" (that done in the body by the hands of men)-
12 remember that at that time you WERE SEPARATE from Christ, excluded
from citizenship in Israel
and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, WITHOUT HOPE
and WITHOUT
GOD in the world.
13 BUT NOW in Christ
Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through
the blood of Christ.
NIV
Romans 9:30-31 – The
Gentiles attained righteousness
30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, WHO DID
NOT PURSUE RIGHTEOUSNESS, have attained to righteousness, even the
righteousness of faith;
31 but Israel, pursuing the law of
righteousness,
HAS NOT ATTAINED to the law of
righteousness.
NKJV
Ephesians 2:14-16 – Create
one humanity out of two
14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two
one and has destroyed the barrier,
the dividing
wall of hostility,
15 by abolishing in his flesh the law with its
commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man (humanity) out of the two, thus making peace,
16 and in this one body to
reconcile
both of them to God through the
cross, by which he put to death their hostility
NIV
Romans 10:12 – There’s now NO difference between Jew or Gentile
12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the
same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him,
NIV
Romans 9:8 – The Children
of Promise are Abraham’s offspring
8 In other words, it is not the natural children who are God's children, but it is the CHILDREN OF THE PROMISE who
are regarded as Abraham's offspring.
NIV
Romans 9:22 -24 – Jews and Gentiles were prepared in
advance
22 What if God, choosing
to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the “objects of his wrath” (Sinners) -prepared for
destruction?
23 What if he did this to make the riches of his
glory known to the “objects of his mercy” (Sinners), whom he PREPARED IN ADVANCE for glory -
24 even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles? NIV
Romans 9:25 - Call the Gentiles my people who are
not my people
25 As he says in Hosea: "I will call them `my people' who are not my
people; and I will call her `my loved one' who is not my loved
one,"
Romans 10:13 - Everyone who calls on the name of the
Lord
13 For "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
Romans 10:9 – Confess with
your mouth and believe in your heart
9 That if you CONFESS WITH YOUR MOUTH, "Jesus is
Lord," and BELIEVE
IN YOUR HEART that God raised him from the dead, YOU WILL BE
SAVED. NIV
In the

there is wisdom.
